Un Global Compact Agreement

In September 2016, the General Assembly decided, through the adoption of the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants, to develop a global pact for safe, orderly and regular migration. The Global Compact on Migration is the first interstate agreement, developed under the auspices of the United Nations, covering all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. The process of developing this global pact began in April 2017. The pages of this section describe 18 months of consultation and negotiation and provide the corresponding documents for each event. On 19 September 2016, heads of state and government met for the first time at the UN General Assembly to discuss migration and refugee issues. This sent a strong political message that migration and refugee issues had become important issues on the international agenda. In adopting the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants, the 193 UN member states recognized the need for a comprehensive approach to human mobility and enhanced global cooperation. The New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants, adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2016, calls for the active participation of the private sector in implementing commitments for refugees and migrants. The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, to be adopted by UN member states in September 2018, will establish a framework for comprehensive cooperation in the area of migrants and human mobility. The President of the General Assembly called on the United Nations Global Compact to facilitate a process in which the private sector could participate in the preparation of the Global Compact for Migration. More than 150 global companies are pushing for a net recovery in the world In this context, after 18 months of consultations and negotiations, UN member states have agreed to adopt a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (draft final document in all official languages). This is the first undying global agreement on a common approach to international migration in all its dimensions.
